NORTH WING GRAND OPENING
On A Blustery Cool Spring Day, Officials From The Ohio State Historical Society And Two Thousand Guests Gathered On This Site To Commemorate The Grand Opening Of The New North Wing Of The Archeological And Historical Museum.
At 1:30 pm on April 26, 1926, a ceremonial unveiling of the cast bronze statue of “The Victorious Soldier” on the stairs of the new addition occurred. With the “Star Spangled Banner” playing, the crowd watched a slow, dramatic unveiling of this patriotic memorial. The “doughboy” soldier was designed by local artist and OSU professor Bruce Wilder Saville. Herbert B. Briggs, the State Architect of Ohio, presided over the event which included musical performances, readings and speeches. This particular Doughboy was modeled after an actual Ohio State student vet. He carries his M1903 Springfield rifle over his shoulder and a captured German helmet in the other hand. During the 50’s and 60’s there was a popular myth that explained that any unkissed co-ed that walked through the university gates at 15th avenue, the doughboy would tip his hat to them.
